1944: The Battle of the Bulge begins on the Western Front during World War II when German forces launch a surprise attack against Allied forces.

1965: The Gemini 6 spacecraft is launched from the Cape Kennedy, Florida, carrying astronauts Walter Schirra Jr. and Thomas Stafford. Later in the mission, they become the first humans to rendezvous and dock with another spacecraft, the Gemini 7.

1991: Kazakhstan becomes the last Soviet republic to declare independence from the Soviet Union, officially ending the USSR.
