International Children’s Book Day

International Children’s Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated on April 2nd each year, in honor of the birth date of Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen, who is known for his famous fairy tales like “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) established this day in 1967, with the aim of promoting children’s literature and fostering a love of reading among young people worldwide.

International Children’s Book Day is a global event that encourages children to discover the joy of reading and celebrates the significance of children’s literature in shaping young minds. The event also highlights the role of authors, illustrators, publishers, and educators in creating quality children’s books that inform, entertain, and inspire children.

Each year, a different IBBY member country is chosen to host International Children’s Book Day, and a theme is selected for the celebrations. The host country organizes various events and activities to promote children’s literature, including:
1. Book fairs, exhibitions, and readings featuring children’s books, authors, and illustrators.
2. Workshops and seminars for educators, librarians, and parents on the importance of reading and the use of children’s literature in education.
3. School and community events, such as storytelling sessions, writing contests, and art competitions related to children’s books.
4. The production and distribution of posters, bookmarks, and other promotional materials to raise awareness about the importance of children’s literature.

International Children’s Book Day serves as a reminder of the vital role that books play in the development of children’s imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills. By celebrating this day, we encourage children to explore the world of literature, nurture a love of reading, and appreciate the cultural and educational value of children’s books.
