International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) was established on May 4, 1999, following a tragic event that occurred in Australia on December 2, 1998. A wildfire in Linton, Victoria, resulted in the deaths of five firefighters who were trying to control the blaze.
In response to this tragedy, firefighter and volunteer Lieutenant JJ Edmondson from Australia proposed the establishment of a day to honor firefighters and recognize their commitment, dedication, and sacrifices. May 4 was chosen as the date for International Firefighters’ Day because it is the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.
