World Habitat Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 through Resolution 40/202. The day was designated to be celebrated on the first Monday of October every year, starting from 1986.
The purpose of World Habitat Day is to raise awareness about the need for adequate housing for all and to encourage the creation of sustainable, healthy, and equitable human settlements.
The idea for World Habitat Day came about as a response to the growing global housing crisis, particularly in urban areas where rapid population growth, insufficient infrastructure, and inadequate housing policies have led to the proliferation of slums and informal settlements.
World Habitat Day is observed worldwide to promote the importance of adequate housing as a basic human right and to advocate for the creation of sustainable, equitable, and healthy human settlements.
