World Entrepreneurs’ Day – A day to celebrate the contributions of entrepreneurs to economic growth, innovation, and job creation, and to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition: This day is observed annually to pay tribute to the struggle against slavery and to remember the horrors of the slave trade. It was first observed on August 23, 1998, in Haiti.

European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism: This day is observed in Europe to remember the victims of totalitarian regimes such as Stalinism and Nazism, and to raise awareness about the dangers of these ideologies. It was declared by the European Parliament in 2008 and is observed annually on August 23.

International Day for the Remembrance of the Battle of Kursk: This day commemorates one of the largest and bloodiest battles of World War II, which took place between July 5 and August 23, 1943, near the Russian city of Kursk. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany and its allies.

National Sponge Cake Day: This day is observed in the United States to celebrate the delicious and versatile dessert known as sponge cake. It is typically made with flour, sugar, eggs, and sometimes other ingredients such as vanilla or lemon zest.

World Plant Milk Day: This day is observed annually on August 22-23 to promote plant-based milk alternatives as a healthier and more sustainable alternative to dairy milk. It was first celebrated in 2017 and is sponsored by the Plant-Based Foods Association.


30 BC: The ancient Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII committed suicide, following the defeat of her forces by Octavian (later known as Augustus) at the Battle of Actium.

1572: The St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre began in France, where thousands of Huguenots (French Protestants) were killed over the course of several days in a wave of violence against them.

1927: The Italian anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were executed in the United States for a robbery and murder they were accused of committing, amid controversy over their guilt and the fairness of their trial.

1939: Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, a non-aggression agreement that secretly divided up spheres of influence in Eastern Europe and paved the way for the outbreak of World War II.

1989: Hungary began dismantling barbed-wire fences and other barriers along its border with Austria, allowing thousands of East Germans to flee to the West in a pivotal moment in the fall of the Iron Curtain.

2011: Libyan rebels captured the capital city of Tripoli from the regime of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi, marking a turning point in the country’s civil war.
