Festivus

Festivus is a non-religious, secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd. It was created by writer Daniel O’Keefe in 1966 but gained widespread popularity after being featured in a 1997 episode of the television show “Seinfeld.”

In the episode, the character Frank Costanza, played by Jerry Stiller, explains that he created Festivus as an alternative to the commercialism and pressures associated with traditional holiday celebrations such as Christmas and Hanukkah.

Festivus is characterized by its unique and quirky customs, which include:
1. Festivus Pole: Instead of a traditional Christmas tree, Festivus celebrants erect an unadorned aluminum pole. The pole is a symbol of simplicity and a reaction against the commercialism of other holiday decorations.
2. Festivus Dinner: A meal is shared among family and friends, typically consisting of simple, home-cooked dishes.
3. Airing of Grievances: During the Festivus celebration, each participant takes turns airing their grievances or complaints about the past year. This ritual allows people to vent their frustrations and start fresh in the coming year.
4. Feats of Strength: Festivus concludes with the Feats of Strength, in which the head of the household challenges another participant to a wrestling match or test of physical strength. The holiday only comes to an end when the head of the household is pinned to the ground or concedes defeat.

While Festivus was initially created as a parody, it has gained a cult following, with people around the world celebrating the holiday as a way to avoid the commercialism and stress associated with the traditional holiday season. Festivus offers a lighthearted and humorous alternative to more serious and religious celebrations, providing an opportunity for people to come together, share their grievances, and enjoy each other’s company without the usual pressures of the holiday season.
