International Animation Day

International Animation Day was established in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA), a member of UNESCO, to celebrate the art of animation. The day was chosen to commemorate the first public performance of Charles-Émile Reynaud’s Théâtre Optique, which took place on October 28, 1892, at the Grevin Museum in Paris. Reynaud’s invention was the first-ever public demonstration of projected animated images, and his Théâtre Optique is considered a precursor to modern animation.

International Animation Day is celebrated annually on October 28, with numerous events and activities organized by ASIFA chapters, animation studios, schools, and cultural institutions around the world.

The day aims to:
1. Promote the art of animation: International Animation Day raises awareness of animation as an art form, showcasing its diversity, creativity, and cultural significance.
2. Encourage collaboration and networking: The day fosters collaboration and networking among animators, studios, schools, and other organizations involved in the animation industry.
3. Support emerging talent: International Animation Day provides a platform for emerging animators to showcase their work, gain exposure, and receive recognition and support.
4. Educate the public: The day offers an opportunity for the public to learn about the history of animation, the techniques used in creating animated films, and the various genres and styles of animation.

Some common activities and events organized on International Animation Day include:
Film screenings: Animation festivals, special screenings, and showcases are held worldwide, featuring animated films from various countries, styles, and genres.
Workshops and masterclasses: Professionals in the animation industry may conduct workshops or masterclasses, sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring animators and enthusiasts.
Exhibitions: Art galleries and museums may host exhibitions related to the history, techniques, and artistry of animation.
Online events: Webinars, panel discussions, and virtual film screenings may be organized, allowing people from around the world to participate and celebrate International Animation Day.

International Animation Day provides an opportunity for animators, studios, and fans to come together and celebrate the creativity and diversity of animation, while also raising awareness of this unique art form and its contribution to the world of cinema and visual storytelling.
