International Asteroid Day was founded by astrophysicist and musician Dr. Brian May, filmmaker Grig Richters, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, and the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Director Simonetta Di Pippo.
The United Nations General Assembly officially declared June 30 as International Asteroid Day in December 2016. The day commemorates the largest asteroid impact in recorded history, the Tunguska event, which took place in Siberia on June 30, 1908.
