International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict was established by the United Nations General Assembly on November 5, 2001, through Resolution 56/4.

The resolution recognized the need to increase awareness about the environmental consequences of armed conflicts and the importance of taking action to protect the environment during such situations.

The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict aims to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by wars and armed conflicts, as well as the need to protect the environment as an essential element for peace, security, and sustainable development.

During wars and armed conflicts, the environment can be directly targeted or suffer collateral damage. Examples include the destruction of forests, the pollution of water sources, and the devastation of ecosystems, which can have long-lasting consequences on the health and well-being of affected populations. Additionally, the exploitation of natural resources can fuel conflicts and perpetuate violence.

On this day, governments, international organizations, and civil society groups engage in various activities to:
1. Raise awareness about the environmental impacts of wars and armed conflicts and the importance of protecting the environment in times of crisis.
2. Encourage parties involved in armed conflicts to respect international laws and agreements that aim to protect the environment, such as the 1977 Environmental Modification Convention (ENMOD) and the 1998 International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute.
3. Promote the development and implementation of policies, strategies, and practices that minimize the environmental impacts of wars and armed conflicts.
4. Advocate for the inclusion of environmental considerations in peacekeeping operations and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
5. Foster international cooperation and dialogue to address the root causes of conflicts and promote sustainable development, environmental protection, and peacebuilding.

The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict serves as a reminder of the need to protect the environment during conflicts and to integrate environmental considerations into peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts to promote long-term sustainability and resilience.
