International Day for South-South Cooperation

The International Day for South-South Cooperation is celebrated annually on September 12. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/58/220 on December 23, 2003.

The date commemorates the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (BAPA) on September 12, 1978.

The BAPA established a framework for South-South cooperation, which refers to the collaboration between developing countries in the Global South in the areas of economic, social, cultural, technical, and political domains. South-South cooperation aims to promote self-reliance, technical assistance, capacity building, and technology transfer among developing countries.

International Day for South-South Cooperation serves as an opportunity to recognize the value of cooperation among developing countries and to promote the principles and objectives of South-South cooperation.

The day focuses on the following aspects:
1. Raising awareness: The day seeks to raise awareness of the importance of South-South cooperation in fostering economic growth, social progress, and sustainable development in the Global South.
2. Sharing best practices: International Day for South-South Cooperation encourages the exchange of experiences, best practices, and lessons learned among developing countries to help address common challenges and achieve shared goals.
3. Promoting partnerships: The day encourages the establishment of new partnerships and the strengthening of existing ones among developing countries, as well as between developing countries and multilateral organizations, the private sector, and civil society.
4. Enhancing capacity building: The day emphasizes the importance of capacity building, technical assistance, and technology transfer in helping developing countries achieve their development objectives.
5. Advocating for policy support: International Day for South-South Cooperation calls for the international community to provide policy support and resources to facilitate and enhance South-South cooperation initiatives.

On this day, various events, workshops, and conferences are organized around the world to highlight the significance of South-South cooperation, discuss its challenges and opportunities, and share success stories.

These events aim to strengthen solidarity and collaboration among developing countries and inspire further South-South cooperation initiatives to promote sustainable development and achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
