International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, also known as World Mangrove Day, was officially adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2015. The day was designated to be celebrated annually on July 26 to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the need for their conservation and sustainable management.

The decision to establish this day was influenced by the advocacy efforts of the NGO Greenpeace and other environmental organizations that recognized the critical role of mangroves in mitigating the impacts of climate change, preserving biodiversity, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem aims to highlight the vital role of mangroves in maintaining the health of our planet and the well-being of the people who depend on them.

The day is observed through various activities and events around the world, focusing on the following aspects:
1. Education and awareness: Raising public awareness about the ecological, economic, and cultural significance of mangrove ecosystems and the threats they face due to deforestation, pollution, and climate change.
2. Conservation and restoration: Encouraging the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems to protect their biodiversity, maintain their ecological functions, and support the livelihoods of local communities.
3. Policy and advocacy: Promoting the adoption and implementation of policies and regulations that support the protection and sustainable use of mangrove ecosystems at the local, national, and international levels.
4. Research and monitoring: Facilitating scientific research and monitoring of mangrove ecosystems to improve our understanding of their ecological functions, assess their health, and inform conservation and management efforts.
5. Community engagement: Encouraging the active participation of local communities, indigenous peoples, and other stakeholders in the conservation and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems, recognizing their traditional knowledge and practices.

On International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, various events such as workshops, seminars, tree planting activities, and educational programs are organized by governments, NGOs, academic institutions, and local communities to promote the importance of mangroves and inspire collective action to protect and restore these valuable ecosystems.
