International Day of Education

International Day of Education was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, in resolution 73/25. The day was established to recognize the critical role that education plays in fostering peace, development, and social progress.

The date, January 24, was chosen to commemorate the first-ever International Day of Education in 2019, emphasizing the importance of education for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

International Day of Education is a global celebration of the power of education as a fundamental human right and a public good that contributes to personal growth, social cohesion, and sustainable development. The day aims to highlight the need for inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all, regardless of socioeconomic background, gender, or disability.

On International Day of Education, governments, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, and individuals are encouraged to:
1. Advocate for the importance of education in the pursuit of peace, development, and social progress, and promote the need to invest in quality education for all.
2. Organize events, workshops, and conferences to discuss and raise awareness about educational challenges and opportunities, such as the importance of early childhood education, gender equality in education, and access to education in conflict-affected and fragile contexts.
3. Share stories of successful educational initiatives, teachers, and students to inspire others and demonstrate the transformative power of education.
4. Engage in dialogue and collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement policies and strategies that promote inclusive and equitable quality education.

International Day of Education serves as a reminder of the importance of education in shaping a better future for individuals, communities, and nations. By celebrating this day, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that everyone, everywhere, has the opportunity to learn and grow through quality education.
