International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) was first proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.

The day was initially observed as the “International Day of Disabled Persons” until 2007 when the name was changed to its current form. The IDPD aims to increase awareness and understanding of disability issues, as well as to mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to achieve the following objectives:
Raise awareness: The day seeks to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, as well as to promote understanding, acceptance, and respect for their rights and dignity.

Promote inclusion: The day encourages governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to take action to promote the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society, including in education, employment, healthcare, and political life.

Support rights and dignity: The day advocates for the protection and promotion of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other relevant international human rights instruments.

Encourage international cooperation: The day emphasizes the need for international cooperation in the field of disability, including through the sharing of information, resources, and best practices.

Various activities and events are organized globally on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, including:
Awareness campaigns: Governments, international organizations, and civil society groups may launch awareness campaigns through traditional and social media platforms to educate the public about disability issues and the need for action to promote inclusion.

Educational events: Workshops, seminars, and conferences may be held to discuss the challenges associated with disability and to share best practices in promoting the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Artistic and cultural events: Film screenings, theater performances, and art exhibitions may be organized to raise awareness about disability issues and to celebrate the talents and achievements of persons with disabilities.

Accessibility initiatives: Public and private sector organizations may take steps to improve the accessibility of their facilities, services, and information for persons with disabilities, in line with the principles of universal design.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society. By raising awareness about disability issues and encouraging action to support the full participation of persons with disabilities, the day aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
