International Day of UN Peacekeepers

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002 through Resolution 57/129. The day commemorates the establishment of the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), on May 29, 1948.

The purpose of the day is to pay tribute to the men and women who have served and continue to serve in UN peacekeeping operations and to honor those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace.

International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29 to recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of UN peacekeepers to the global efforts to maintain peace and security. Over the years, UN peacekeeping missions have played a crucial role in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and humanitarian assistance in various parts of the world.

On this day, several events and activities are organized to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers:
1. Memorial services: Memorial services are held at the United Nations headquarters and in peacekeeping mission areas to pay tribute to the peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
2. Award ceremonies: The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, established by the United Nations in 1997, is awarded to peacekeepers who have died while serving in a UN peacekeeping operation. The medal is presented to the families of the fallen peacekeepers during a ceremony at the United Nations headquarters.
3. Awareness campaigns: The United Nations and its member states use social media platforms, press releases, and public statements to raise awareness about the importance of UN peacekeeping operations and the sacrifices made by peacekeepers in the pursuit of peace.
4. Exhibitions and cultural events: Exhibitions, film screenings, and panel discussions may be organized to showcase the work of UN peacekeepers and highlight the challenges they face while serving in conflict zones.

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers serves as a reminder of the vital role UN peacekeepers play in maintaining global peace and security and as an opportunity to express gratitude for their dedication and sacrifices in the line of duty.
