International Men’s Day

International Men’s Day was first conceptualized by Thomas Oaster, a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and was inaugurated on February 7, 1992. However, the event did not gain traction, and it was later relaunched by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, on November 19, 1999.

Dr. Teelucksingh chose November 19 to coincide with his father’s birthday, who was a positive role model for him. Since then, International Men’s Day has been observed annually on November 19 and has grown in prominence, with events held in more than 70 countries around the world.

International Men’s Day aims to achieve the following objectives:
Celebrate men’s contributions: The day recognizes and honors the positive contributions that men make to society, their families, and communities, highlighting the importance of positive male role models.

Promote gender equality: International Men’s Day seeks to promote gender equality by addressing issues that disproportionately affect men, such as men’s mental health, suicide rates, and workplace fatalities.

Raise awareness of men’s issues: The day aims to raise public awareness about the social, emotional, and health issues that men face, encouraging open discussions and breaking down stereotypes and stigmas surrounding men’s well-being.

Encourage self-care and well-being: International Men’s Day encourages men to prioritize their physical, emotional, and mental health by seeking support and engaging in self-care activities.

Various activities and events are organized globally on International Men’s Day, including:
Awareness campaigns: Traditional and social media campaigns are launched to raise public awareness about men’s issues and promote positive male role models.

Educational events: Seminars, workshops, and conferences may be held to discuss men’s issues, such as men’s mental health, fatherhood, and the role of men in promoting gender equality.

Community events: Local organizations may host events to celebrate men’s contributions to their communities, such as award ceremonies, sports events, and fundraisers for men’s health initiatives.

Support groups and forums: Events may be organized to provide support, information, and resources for men and to encourage open discussions about men’s well-being and the challenges they face.

International Men’s Day serves as a reminder of the importance of celebrating men’s contributions, promoting gender equality, and addressing the unique challenges that men face. By raising awareness and fostering open conversations, we can work towards a more equitable and supportive society for all.
