International Translation Day

International Translation Day is celebrated annually on September 30, the feast day of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators. St. Jerome, a Christian scholar and priest, was best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate.

The International Federation of Translators (FIT) first proposed International Translation Day in 1953 as a way to recognize the importance of translators and their work, which often goes unnoticed. In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/71/288, officially declaring September 30 as International Translation Day.

International Translation Day is dedicated to honoring the work of translators, interpreters, and other language professionals who play a crucial role in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps, promoting international communication, and facilitating understanding among people from diverse backgrounds.

The day aims to:
1. Raise awareness: Increase public awareness of the vital role that translators and interpreters play in fostering global understanding, cooperation, and diplomacy.
2. Celebrate the profession: Recognize and celebrate the contributions of language professionals to various fields, including literature, science, technology, and diplomacy.
3. Promote professional development: Encourage translators and interpreters to engage in continuous learning, networking, and collaboration to enhance their skills and stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies.
4. Advocate for quality: Emphasize the importance of quality, accuracy, and cultural sensitivity in translation and interpretation, and promote adherence to professional standards and ethics.
5. Encourage dialogue: Facilitate discussions between language professionals, clients, and stakeholders to share best practices, address challenges, and explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

On International Translation Day, language professionals, organizations, and educational institutions worldwide organize various events, such as conferences, seminars, workshops, and cultural programs, to celebrate the profession and promote the importance of translation and interpretation. The day also serves as a reminder of the valuable role that language professionals play in fostering cross-cultural understanding and global communication.
