Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day

The United Nations General Assembly designated June 27 as Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME) Day through Resolution 71/279 on April 6, 2017.

The day was established to recognize the importance of MSMEs in promoting innovation, creativity, and decent work for all, as well as their significant contributions to the global economy. The day also aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities that MSMEs face and to encourage governments and policymakers to support these enterprises.

Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day celebrates the vital role MSMEs play in global economic development, job creation, and poverty alleviation. MSMEs account for the majority of businesses worldwide and are critical drivers of economic growth, particularly in developing countries. They contribute significantly to employment, innovation, and sustainable development.

The observance of MSME Day highlights the importance of providing support and resources to these enterprises to help them overcome challenges such as accessing finance, managing risks, and navigating complex regulatory environments. The day also emphasizes the need for greater collaboration between governments, the private sector, and international organizations to foster an environment that enables MSMEs to thrive.

Events and activities organized to commemorate MSME Day may include:
1. Conferences and workshops: Governments, international organizations, and industry associations may organize conferences and workshops to discuss the challenges facing MSMEs and to share best practices and innovative solutions.
2. Networking events: Local and regional business associations may host networking events to bring together MSME owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals to exchange ideas, experiences, and resources.
3. Awards and recognition ceremonies: Governments and industry associations may recognize the achievements of outstanding MSMEs and entrepreneurs through award ceremonies and other recognition events.
4. Educational campaigns: Educational campaigns may be launched to inform the public about the importance of MSMEs and the role they play in economic development, job creation, and poverty alleviation.
5. Advocacy and policy discussions: Governments, policymakers, and industry associations may engage in discussions and debates to identify policy measures and support mechanisms that can help MSMEs overcome challenges and achieve sustainable growth.

By observing Micro-, Small-, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, the international community acknowledges the critical role that these businesses play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reaffirms its commitment to supporting their growth and development.
