National Mario Day

National Mario Day is celebrated on March 10, as the date resembles the name “Mario” when written numerically (Mar10). This day is dedicated to the beloved video game character Mario, created by the legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto at the Japanese video game company Nintendo.

Mario made his first appearance in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong as a character called “Jumpman.” However, he was later renamed “Mario” in honor of Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America’s warehouse during the company’s early days.

Mario gained immense popularity as the main character in the 1985 platform video game Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game became a worldwide success, and Mario turned into the face of Nintendo, spawning numerous sequels, spin-offs, and adaptations across various gaming platforms.
