World Day Against Cyber Censorship

World Day Against Cyber Censorship was first observed on March 12, 2008, initiated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Amnesty International. The day was created to raise awareness about the importance of a free and open internet and to encourage governments worldwide to respect and protect the right to freedom of expression in the digital age.

RSF is an international non-governmental organization that advocates for freedom of information and the press, while Amnesty International is a global human rights organization that campaigns against human rights abuses and for justice for those whose rights have been violated.

World Day Against Cyber Censorship is an annual event that aims to promote the free flow of information on the internet and to fight against the various forms of online censorship that restrict access to information, hinder freedom of expression, and negatively impact the work of journalists and human rights activists. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of an uncensored internet in fostering an informed and empowered global citizenry.

Various events and activities are organized to commemorate World Day Against Cyber Censorship, such as:
1. Online campaigns: Organizations and activists use social media platforms to raise awareness about the issue of cyber censorship, share stories of individuals affected by it, and encourage support for a free and open internet.
2. Conferences and workshops: Experts, activists, and journalists may participate in conferences and workshops discussing the current state of internet freedom, the impact of cyber censorship on human rights, and strategies to counter online censorship.
3. Awards: Reporters Without Borders annually presents the Netizen Prize on this day to honor an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the defense of online freedom of expression.
4. Educational materials: Organizations may produce and distribute educational materials to inform the public about the importance of internet freedom and the dangers of cyber censorship.

World Day Against Cyber Censorship is an opportunity to stand up for internet freedom, promote the free flow of information online, and support the efforts of those who fight against online censorship and surveillance.
