World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

The United Nations General Assembly established the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (WDCDD) on January 30, 1995, through resolution A/RES/49/115.

The day is observed annually on June 17 to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 1994. The UNCCD is an international agreement that addresses the problems of land degradation, desertification, and drought, particularly in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas.

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is a global observance that raises awareness about the challenges and consequences of desertification, land degradation, and drought. It also promotes the implementation of the UNCCD and encourages international cooperation in addressing these issues. The day highlights the importance of sustainable land management practices, restoration of degraded lands, and the need to preserve and rehabilitate ecosystems to maintain their productivity and support livelihoods.

Each year, WDCDD focuses on a specific theme to draw attention to various aspects of desertification and drought. Activities and events organized to mark the day may include:
1. Educational campaigns: Governments, non-governmental organizations, and educational institutions may develop and distribute informational materials, hold lectures, or organize workshops to increase public understanding of desertification, land degradation, and drought.
2. Media coverage: Journalists and media organizations may publish articles or broadcast programs that highlight the issues related to desertification, land degradation, and drought, as well as the efforts being made to combat them.
3. Community activities: Local communities may organize tree planting activities, clean-up campaigns, or other environmentally focused events to promote sustainable land management and restoration efforts.
4. Policy discussions: Government representatives, international organizations, and experts may use the day to engage in dialogues and share best practices for addressing desertification, land degradation, and drought, and implementing the UNCCD.

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought serves as an important reminder of the urgent need for global cooperation in addressing land degradation, desertification, and drought. By promoting sustainable land management, restoration, and rehabilitation efforts, we can protect our planet’s ecosystems and ensure a better future for all.
