World Food Safety Day

World Food Safety Day was first celebrated on June 7, 2019. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

The main goal of World Food Safety Day is to raise awareness about the importance of food safety and inspire action to help prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks.

Food safety is a vital aspect of public health, as it helps to ensure that the food we consume is safe, nutritious, and free from harmful contaminants. Foodborne illnesses can have severe consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Moreover, unsafe food can lead to economic losses for individuals, businesses, and countries.

World Food Safety Day is celebrated annually on June 7 to highlight the importance of food safety and the role it plays in maintaining public health, supporting economic development, and improving the quality of life for people around the world. The day encourages governments, businesses, and individuals to take action to ensure that the food we eat is safe and nutritious.

Activities and events organized to commemorate World Food Safety Day include:
1. Awareness campaigns: Organizations and governments use various platforms, including social media, to raise awareness about food safety and share best practices for handling, preparing, and storing food.
2. Educational events: Schools, universities, and institutions may organize workshops, seminars, or lectures to educate students and the public about food safety and the importance of adhering to food safety regulations.
3. Training and capacity building: Governments, NGOs, and businesses may conduct training programs to help improve food safety practices and standards within the food industry.
4. Policy discussions: Experts and stakeholders may participate in conferences, panel discussions, or roundtables to discuss current food safety challenges and explore potential solutions.

World Food Safety Day serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety of the food we eat and the role that everyone, from farmers and manufacturers to retailers and consumers, plays in maintaining a safe and healthy food system.
