World Habitat Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 through Resolution 40/202. The day was designated to be celebrated on the first Monday of October every year, starting from 1986.
The purpose of World Habitat Day is to raise awareness about the need for adequate housing for all and to encourage the creation of sustainable, healthy, and equitable human settlements.
The idea for World Habitat Day came about as a response to the growing global housing crisis, particularly in urban areas where rapid population growth, insufficient infrastructure, and inadequate housing policies have led to the proliferation of slums and informal settlements.
World Habitat Day is observed worldwide to promote the importance of adequate housing as a basic human right and to advocate for the creation of sustainable, equitable, and healthy human settlements.
The day focuses on the following key themes:
1. Raising awareness: Highlighting the global housing crisis and the need for adequate housing as a fundamental human right.
2. Advocacy: Encouraging governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to prioritize housing and urban development policies that ensure access to adequate and affordable housing for all.
3. Sustainable development: Promoting sustainable urbanization, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation and adaptation in the context of housing and human settlements.
4. Collaboration: Fostering partnerships between governments, private sector, civil society, and local communities to develop and implement innovative housing solutions.
5. Sharing knowledge: Facilitating the exchange of best practices, experiences, and ideas in housing and urban development among countries and cities.
On World Habitat Day, various events and activities are organized globally, including conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and cultural performances that focus on housing and urban development issues. These events are often supported by the United Nations, governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations. The day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to adequate, affordable, and sustainable housing, and that human settlements are developed in an environmentally friendly and socially inclusive manner.
Hidden Object Games
In observance of World Habitat Day, we invite you to join us in playing a special edition of our Hidden Object Game! This day is dedicated to promoting sustainable development policies that ensure adequate shelter for all, and our game is designed to educate and raise awareness about this vital cause.
Navigate through various habitats around the world in this game – from bustling cities to tranquil rural landscapes, from lush forests to barren deserts. Look for hidden objects that reflect the diversity of life and living conditions around the world, such as different types of houses, tools for sustainable living, species that are crucial to their habitats, and symbols of urban development.
With each object you find, uncover a fact or a piece of trivia related to our shared human habitat and the importance of sustainable living. It’s a game that’s not just fun, but also enlightening!
Join us in advocating for a world where everyone has a decent place to live, and let’s all be a part of this global conversation.
