World Humanitarian Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2008 to honor the memory of Sergio Vieira de Mello, a UN diplomat and humanitarian, and 21 other UN staff members who lost their lives in a terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, on August 19, 2003.
The day was designated to be celebrated annually on August 19 to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of humanitarian aid workers who risk their lives to provide assistance to people affected by crises, conflicts, and natural disasters.
