World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) has its roots in the establishment of the International Telegraph Union, which was founded on May 17, 1865. This day was initially celebrated as World Telecommunication Day to mark the founding of the International Telegraph Union.

n 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called for the celebration of World Information Society Day on May 17. Later, in November 2006, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) decided to combine both events, resulting in the creation of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated annually on May 17 to raise awareness about the importance of the internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) in today’s society. The day highlights the potential of these technologies in bridging the digital divide, promoting social and economic development, and empowering individuals and communities worldwide.

Each year, WTISD focuses on a specific theme to address current challenges and opportunities in the field of telecommunications and the information society.

The ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for issues related to ICTs, organizes various events and activities worldwide, including:
• Conferences, seminars, and workshops: These events bring together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss and exchange ideas on the annual theme and related issues in the field of ICTs.
• Awards and recognition: The ITU presents awards to individuals or organizations that have made a significant contribution to the development of ICTs or have demonstrated innovative use of ICTs for social and economic development.
• Public awareness campaigns: Various campaigns and initiatives are launched to raise awareness about the importance of ICTs, their potential for development, and the need to bridge the digital divide.
• Educational activities: Schools, universities, and other educational institutions organize activities to educate students and the public about the role of ICTs in society and their potential to drive social and economic development.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of ICTs in our lives, promote digital inclusion, and strive for a connected and inclusive information society for all.
