World Wildlife Day

World Wildlife Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 20, 2013, during its 68th session. The day was chosen to coincide with the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) on March 3, 1973.

CITES is an international agreement between governments aimed at ensuring that international trade in wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. The first World Wildlife Day was celebrated on March 3, 2014.

World Wildlife Day is an annual event dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the world’s wild animals and plants. It aims to highlight the importance of wildlife and the ecosystem to human well-being and sustainable development, as well as to emphasize the urgent need for combating wildlife crime, conserving biodiversity, and protecting endangered species.

Each year, World Wildlife Day is celebrated under a specific theme to focus on a particular aspect of wildlife conservation. Past themes have included topics such as “Big Cats: Predators Under Threat,” “Life Below Water: For People and Planet,” and “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet.” The themes aim to address different dimensions of wildlife conservation and sustainable development.

To celebrate World Wildlife Day, people around the world engage in various activities:
1. Educational events: Schools, colleges, and universities may organize seminars, workshops, and presentations to educate students and the public about the importance of wildlife conservation and the need to protect endangered species.
2. Social media campaigns: Individuals and organizations use social media platforms to share information, images, and videos about wildlife conservation, as well as to raise awareness about the threats facing wildlife and the importance of taking action.
3. Community events: Local communities may arrange events such as wildlife-themed art exhibitions, film screenings, or nature walks to promote the value of wildlife and its conservation.
4. Fundraising: Many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and conservation groups use World Wildlife Day as an opportunity to raise funds for their wildlife conservation projects and initiatives.

By observing World Wildlife Day, the global community aims to raise awareness about the significance of wildlife conservation, promote the sustainable use of natural resources, and inspire action to combat wildlife crime and protect endangered species.
