World Youth Skills Day

World Youth Skills Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on November 11, 2014, through Resolution A/RES/69/145. The day was designated to be celebrated every year on July 15 to raise awareness about the importance of youth skills development.

The day aims to promote the acquisition of skills and competencies among young people to better prepare them for the labor market and address the challenges of unemployment and underemployment.

The idea for a dedicated day to celebrate youth skills development came about due to a growing recognition of the need to empower young people and equip them with the necessary skills to succeed in today’s rapidly changing and increasingly globalized world.
World Youth Skills Day is observed worldwide to generate greater awareness of the value of skills development in tackling youth unemployment and fostering economic growth and social development.

ctivities and events on this day focus on the following aspects:
1. Advocacy: Raising awareness about the importance of investing in youth skills development and encouraging governments, businesses, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to collaborate in creating opportunities for skills acquisition.
2. Education and training: Promoting the expansion and diversification of skills development opportunities, including technical and vocational education and training (TVET), apprenticeships, internships, and on-the-job training.
3. Inclusivity: Ensuring that skills development initiatives are inclusive and accessible to all young people, irrespective of their gender, socio-economic background, or geographic location.
4. Innovation: Encouraging the integration of digital and technological advancements in skills development programs to better prepare young people for the future of work.
5. Dialogue: Facilitating discussions between stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, employers, and young people, to share best practices and identify strategies for enhancing youth skills development.

On World Youth Skills Day, various events, workshops, seminars, and conferences are organized globally, often with the support of the United Nations and other international organizations, to emphasize the importance of youth skills development and to provide young people with opportunities to learn and develop their skills. The day serves as a reminder to governments, businesses, and civil society organizations of their shared responsibility in nurturing a skilled and empowered youth population.
