Global Recycling Day

Global Recycling Day was created by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and first celebrated on March 18, 2018. The BIR, founded in 1948, is a global organization representing the interests of the recycling industry on an international scale.

Recognizing the importance of recycling in preserving natural resources and reducing environmental pollution, the BIR established Global Recycling Day to raise awareness about the significance of recycling and to encourage individuals, communities, and businesses worldwide to participate in recycling efforts.

Global Recycling Day is celebrated annually on March 18 and aims to promote the concept of the “Seventh Resource,” highlighting the importance of recycling in conserving the world’s six primary resources: water, air, coal, oil, natural gas, and minerals. By encouraging recycling and the use of recycled materials, Global Recycling Day seeks to reduce the demand for new resources and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The day is marked by various events and activities, including educational programs, workshops, recycling initiatives, and social media campaigns, all designed to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and the need to recycle responsibly. Schools, businesses, communities, and governments are encouraged to participate in Global Recycling Day by organizing events, promoting recycling in their networks, and sharing information about the importance of recycling and the role it plays in sustainable development.

Global Recycling Day is an opportunity for people around the world to come together and support the common goal of protecting our planet’s resources, reducing waste, and ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.
