International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend

International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) is an annual event that was established in 1998 by two Scottish ham radio operators, Mike Dalrymple and John Forsyth. It was initially conceived as the International Lighthouse Weekend but was later expanded to include lightships.

The event is held on the third full weekend of August each year. The primary purpose of ILLW is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, as well as to promote amateur radio.

During International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, amateur radio operators from around the world set up their equipment at lighthouses and lightships, attempting to make contact with other operators at similar locations worldwide.

The event is not a contest, but rather an opportunity for participants to celebrate the history and importance of lighthouses and lightships, to encourage their preservation, and to share the hobby of amateur radio.

Activities and events on this weekend often focus on the following aspects:

Preservation and Restoration: The event raises awareness about the importance of preserving and restoring lighthouses and lightships as historical landmarks and symbols of maritime heritage.

Amateur Radio: ILLW promotes the hobby of amateur radio and its potential for emergency communication, education, and international goodwill. The event brings together radio operators, lighthouse enthusiasts, and the general public to learn more about these topics.

Community Engagement: Local communities often organize events, tours, and open houses at participating lighthouses and lightships during the weekend, providing opportunities for people to learn about the history and significance of these structures.

Global Participation: The event encourages international participation and fosters a sense of global cooperation and camaraderie among lighthouse and lightship enthusiasts and amateur radio operators.

During International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, participants set up temporary radio stations at lighthouses and lightships worldwide and exchange messages with other operators. The event helps to raise public awareness about the historical and cultural value of these structures, while also promoting the hobby of amateur radio and its potential for emergency communication, education, and international goodwill.
