International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on November 17, 1965, and has been celebrated annually on September 8 since 1966.

The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of literacy as a crucial aspect of human development, education, and social progress. UNESCO created this day to highlight the global literacy challenges and to promote the fundamental right to education for all, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

International Literacy Day is observed worldwide to emphasize the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies, and to advocate for a world where everyone has access to quality education and the opportunity to develop their reading and writing skills.

The day focuses on the following aspects:
1. Awareness: Raising awareness about the current state of global literacy, including the challenges faced by millions of people who lack basic literacy skills, and emphasizing the need for international cooperation to address these issues.
2. Advocacy: Encouraging governments, policymakers, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to prioritize and invest in literacy and education initiatives.
3. Inclusivity: Promoting equitable access to literacy and education opportunities for all, irrespective of age, gender, socio-economic background, or geographic location.
4. Innovation: Fostering the development and implementation of innovative approaches to literacy education, including the integration of technology and digital resources.
5. Collaboration: Facilitating partnerships between governments, international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to work together in addressing global literacy challenges.

On International Literacy Day, various events, workshops, conferences, and campaigns are organized globally, often with the support of UNESCO and other international organizations, to highlight the importance of literacy and the need for concerted efforts to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to acquire literacy skills. The day serves as a reminder of the crucial role literacy plays in personal and social development, and the collective responsibility to promote literacy for all.
