International Migrants Day

International Migrants Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 4, 2000.

The date was chosen to commemorate the adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families on December 18, 1990. The day was created to recognize the contributions of migrants to societies worldwide and to promote the protection of their human rights.

International Migrants Day aims to achieve the following objectives:
1. Raise awareness: The day seeks to highlight the social, economic, and cultural contributions of migrants to their host countries and their countries of origin. It also aims to increase understanding and acceptance of migrants and the challenges they face.
2. Protect migrants’ rights: The day advocates for the protection of the human rights of all migrants, regardless of their legal status. It calls for the implementation of policies and practices that ensure migrants are treated with dignity and respect.
3. Encourage international cooperation: The day emphasizes the need for international cooperation and dialogue on migration issues, recognizing that migration is a global phenomenon that requires a coordinated and comprehensive response.
4. Promote integration: The day encourages efforts to promote the integration of migrants into their host societies, including access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.

Various activities and events may be organized globally on International Migrants Day, including:
1. Conferences and workshops: Governments, international organizations, and civil society groups may organize conferences and workshops to discuss migration-related issues, share best practices, and explore potential solutions.
2. Cultural events: Art exhibitions, film screenings, and music performances that showcase the cultural diversity and contributions of migrants may be organized to foster understanding and appreciation.
3. Media campaigns: Awareness campaigns may be launched through traditional and social media platforms to raise public awareness about the contributions of migrants and the importance of protecting their rights.
4. Advocacy initiatives: Petitions, rallies, and demonstrations may be held to call for policy reforms and actions that protect and promote the rights of migrants.

International Migrants Day serves as a reminder of the valuable contributions migrants make to their host countries and their countries of origin. By raising awareness and advocating for the protection of migrants’ rights, the day aims to foster a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable global society.
