International Volunteer Day

International Volunteer Day (IVD) was established by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on December 17, 1985. The purpose of IVD is to celebrate the contributions of volunteers around the world and to promote the values of volunteerism.

December 5 was chosen as the date to mark this day, and since its inception, IVD has been observed annually, gaining support and recognition from governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and individuals worldwide.

International Volunteer Day aims to achieve the following objectives:
Celebrate volunteers: The day recognizes and appreciates the contributions of millions of volunteers around the world who dedicate their time, skills, and efforts to make a positive impact on their communities and the world at large.

Promote volunteerism: The day seeks to encourage more people to get involved in volunteer activities and to showcase the benefits of volunteering, such as personal growth, skill development, and the fostering of social cohesion and solidarity.

Raise awareness: The day raises awareness about the importance of volunteerism in addressing various social, economic, and environmental challenges and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Support volunteer organizations: The day encourages governments, international organizations, and private sector entities to support volunteer organizations by providing resources, recognition, and opportunities for collaboration.

Various activities and events are organized globally on International Volunteer Day, including:
Award ceremonies: Volunteers and volunteer organizations may be recognized for their contributions and achievements through award ceremonies and other forms of public recognition.

Awareness campaigns: Governments, international organizations, and civil society groups may launch awareness campaigns through traditional and social media platforms to promote the value of volunteerism and to encourage more people to get involved in volunteer activities.

Volunteer activities: Communities, organizations, and individuals may organize or participate in various volunteer activities, such as community cleanups, tree planting, food drives, and educational workshops.

Panel discussions and workshops: Seminars, conferences, and workshops may be held to discuss the role of volunteerism in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges and to share best practices in volunteer management and support.

International Volunteer Day serves as a reminder of the significant role that volunteers play in promoting peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development worldwide. By celebrating their contributions and promoting the value of volunteerism, the day aims to inspire more people to engage in volunteer activities and to foster a global culture of solidarity and civic engagement.
